Remote hiring attracts scammers. Learn the warning signs so you can walk away quickly.
Red flags
- You are asked to pay a fee, deposit, or training cost to get the job.
- A check arrives and you are asked to forward part of it or buy equipment from a vendor they pick.
- They ask for your ID, bank details, or passwords before any interview or agreement.
- The interview happens only in a chat app and the company has no real web presence.
- The pay is far too high for simple tasks, or the job description is vague.
- They push you off the platform to pay or communicate before any contract.
- The sender uses a free email address that does not match the company.
What to do
- Pause. Do not send money or personal documents.
- Check the company website, LinkedIn page, and the person's profile yourself, not through links they send.
- Ask for a written agreement and a video call.
- If it still feels wrong, walk away and report the post to the platform.
A real employer never needs you to pay to start working.
